When your child has outgrown the baby bed, it's time to switch to a junior bed. There are many different junior beds on the market, and no matter which one you choose, we have a chemical-free and allergy-friendly junior mattress that fits your child's bed perfectly.
YOU SHOULD CHOOSE A COCOON COMPANY JUNIOR MATTRESS BECAUSE IT IS:
We recommend choosing a junior mattress that does not contain harmful chemicals and is allergy-friendly for the child to sleep on. This is far from the case with many mattresses available on the market today. Often, junior mattresses are filled with polyester and synthetic foam materials - like memory foam - that contain many harmful chemicals that off-gas while your child sleeps on the mattress, which the child will then inhale.
Children should sleep on a mattress that supports their small bodies optimally and provides good comfort. The mattress should be firm and not too soft. All junior mattresses from Cocoon meet all current recommendations in the field and are also made from pure natural materials without synthetic fillers. You can find our junior mattresses with kapok - and natural latex filling.
The quality of our junior mattresses is truly high, and you get a mattress with excellent durability. Quality, chemical-free, and comfort are three very important parameters to keep an eye on when choosing a junior mattress for your child. Children spend many hours of the day sleeping, and it is during sleep that children grow the most, digest the day's impressions, and recharge for the coming day. So a good night's sleep is crucial for your child's health and well-being.
It is quite individual when a child is ready to move to a junior bed. It can be when the child is too big to sleep in the baby bed and when their sleep is disturbed by constantly hitting the sides of the baby bed during sleep. Thus, there is a need for extra movement space for the child. Remember that small children often move much more in their sleep than adults.
In many families, there is a natural change in the need for bed space when younger siblings arrive and need to take over the baby bed.
How long a junior bed is used depends on both the child's size and the dimensions of the junior bed you have chosen. Several junior beds are made with extensions so they can grow with the child and be used for several years. If you choose a junior bed with extensions, we have extension mattresses ready in all sizes for the most commonly used beds.
A junior mattress is the mattress the child uses between the baby mattress and the adult mattress. Therefore, it also lies in size between the two. There are junior mattresses in many different sizes that fit both standard baby beds and junior beds from, among others, Stokke and Sebra. Most junior beds are between 140160 cm long and 7090 cm wide. Particularly popular are the dimensions 70x140 cm and 70x160 cm, which are the most commonly used junior mattresses. You should choose the size of the junior mattress that fits your child's bed so that there is no gap either at the sides or the head end where the bed frame is not covered by the mattress.
So there is no simple answer to how big a junior mattress is. It entirely depends on which bed you choose for your child, and we will make sure to have a Cocoon Company junior bed mattress ready that fits.
A junior mattress should ideally be 8-10 cm thick to optimally support your child's body. If you choose a mattress that is too thin and soft, the child will be able to feel the bed frame under the mattress and thus not lie very comfortably. Our Cocoon Company junior mattresses are created based on the recommended firmness and thickness. Note that a child's mattress should not be as thick as an adult's. More than 10 cm will cause the mattress to rise too high above the bed's edges. Also, a child weighs far fewer kilos than an adult, so the same amount of filling is not needed to achieve comfort.
It is not possible to wash a junior mattress in the washing machine. We recommend spot cleaning the cover if an accident should occur. Make sure the mattress is completely dry before making the bed again. It is almost unavoidable that accidents happen occasionally in a child's bed. It can be from the diaper, but also when the child is sick. Many children will become diaper-free at night while sleeping in a junior bed and thus have a period where they practice. Therefore, it might be a good idea to have a junior mattress protector in the bed. For some children, it takes a few years before they no longer wet the bed at night, while for others, it happens almost overnight. Both are completely normal, and regardless of how your child handles the transition, we have a breathable mattress protector that fits your junior mattress.
If you want to protect the mattress from accidents and make it easier to wash, we recommend our kapok junior mattress toppers. They can be machine washed at up to 60 degrees, so you can easily get the bed ready again.
In general, it is not recommended that mattresses are passed down between multiple children. The mattress will take the shape of the previous child who slept on it, and there may also be many bacteria and allergens hidden in the mattress. The latter should be particularly considered if the mattress comes from another home where the junior bed was bought used and comes with a used mattress. Here, we would always recommend buying a new mattress for the used bed.
