Why is kapok good for juniors?

Kapok is a plant fiber with about 80% air inside each fiber. Around the fiber is an ultra-thin layer of wax, making kapok water-repellent. This means the mattress:

  • circulates air and helps the body release heat
  • wicks sweat away, so the surface feels dry and comfortable
  • does not trap moisture in the core, making the sleeping environment cleaner and drier
  • Kapok contains a natural bitter substance that makes the fiber resistant to mold and dust mites. This is a clear advantage for children with sensitive airways or a tendency to allergies and for anyone who wants to create a clean, antimicrobial sleeping environment.

Cocoon Company: from fiber to finished mattress – without compromises

When you choose a junior bed mattress from Cocoon Company, you choose specialized craftsmanship and material integrity throughout.

  • Handmade filling and finish
Each mattress is hand-stuffed and hand-sewn for a uniform, firm sleeping surface. This provides stable support that withstands everyday use.
  • Pure inside and out
We use untreated kapok as filling and GOTS-certified cotton as fabric. We do not wrap natural filling in polyester, as it reduces breathability and the experience of a chemical-free product.
  • Selected kapok from wild-growing trees
The kapok comes from wild-growing trees and is organic and untreated. We select the fibers according to an internal quality standard that ensures a clean and stable quality kapok fiber.

The result is a junior bed mattress that combines firm comfort, high breathability, and ecology.

Comfort in practice – how a kapok junior mattress feels

A kapok mattress is naturally firm. Many parents find that the firmness provides calmer nights because the child lies stable and does not "sink" into the surface. If you want a bit more give in the surface without losing support, you can place a kapok mattress pad or kapok mattress topper on top. This maintains breathability and makes fine-tuning simple.

Sizes and fit

The most popular junior sizes are 70×140 cm and 70×160 cm. We also offer other sizes and selected special sizes. If you are unsure about the fit for the bed frame or whether you have slatted bases or solid bases, we are happy to help.

Tip for solid bases: Emphasize frequent airing, as a solid base does not provide the same natural ventilation as slats.

For children who are warm at night

Kapok does not absorb moisture but allows it to pass through, so the surface remains drier. If your child is warm, we recommend combining the mattress with a kapok mattress pad, kapok duvet and pillow. This way, you get the same breathable and moisture-wicking properties throughout the bed.

Maintenance – easy and effective

  • Air regularly
Stand the mattress on its side so the bottom and sides get air. This is especially important with solid bases.
  • Shape the filling as needed
Massage/press the kapok fibers from the edge towards the center where the body exerts the most pressure. This prevents indentations.
  • Spot clean
Use a tightly wrung cloth for stains. Protect everyday use with a breathable mattress protector, so you don't block air circulation.

The complete junior sleeping environment

To maintain the mattress's benefits, the rest of the bed should also be breathable and chemical-free:

FAQ – the most frequently asked questions

When should you switch to a junior bed?

When the child has outgrown the baby bed, or when you notice the need for more space and freedom of movement. Typically between 2 and 4 years, but base it on your child and your daily life.

Is a kapok junior mattress too hard?

It is firm because firmness provides stable support and calm sleep. If you want a bit more "give," a kapok mattress topper or pad can adjust the comfort without blocking breathability.

Does kapok help with night sweats?

Yes. The fiber has very high air circulation and does not trap moisture, providing a drier and more breathable night's sleep. Combine with kapok duvet and pillow for full effect.

Can we reuse an older mattress for little sister or brother?

We recommend a new mattress. A used mattress may have permanent indentations, become too soft, and may contain remnants from accidents.

How do we best care for the mattress?

Air often, shape the fibers with your hands as needed, and use breathable protection. Avoid tight, non-breathable covers.
