Cocoon Merino Wool

A good night's sleep is essential for our health, as most people know. Therefore, we believe it's important to give yourself the best conditions for achieving as comfortable and uninterrupted a night's sleep as possible. A Cocoon wool duvet is a cool, breathable, and temperature-regulating all-season duvet that can help create the right conditions for just that. The lightness of merino wool allows the duvet to regulate the heat around the body and transport excess moisture and heat away from the body, so you will experience a temperate and dry night's sleep.

Our wool duvet is filled with 100% untreated merino wool and covered with a cover of certified organic cotton.
What makes our Cocoon merino wool duvet special:

  • Temperature-regulating & moisture-wicking
  • 100% organic and chemical-free materials
  • Naturally hypoallergenic & dust mite-free
  • Unique carding

Why choose a wool duvet?

Most people can relate to the experience of a feather or down duvet becoming very warm during the night. You get so warm that you need to lift the duvet a bit during the night to cool down. This is because feathers and down are both fantastic at insulating. The good insulation provides a really nice feeling during the cold months when we want to retain as much heat as possible. It's really nice until you've warmed the duvet and mattress to body temperature. After that, the body needs to get rid of the excess heat and moisture. This is where feathers and down unfortunately often fall short.

Many have the perception that wool is also just a warm fiber, only suitable for winter. The truth is, however, that wool possesses unrivaled properties in terms of temperature and moisture regulation, making it suitable for both cold and warm weather. Wool uses your body temperature to generate heat, and when it gets too warm, the wool absorbs the moisture around the body and cools the body down. The secret behind the wool fiber's incredible breathability is the lanolin-rich surface, which allows the fiber to absorb large amounts of moisture. Merino wool can absorb 35% of its own weight in water and moisture without feeling wet and continues to keep your body dry and warm. It is also the lanolin content in merino wool that ensures your duvet does not smell of sweat and creates an antibacterial environment that dust mites cannot live in. However, it is only in untreated wool that the lanolin is still retained, and therefore there will be a big difference between a duvet with untreated wool and a regular wool duvet.

Merino wool is distinguished by having slightly twisted fibers, making the wool perfect for carding into a fluffy soft 'cloud' of wool fibers. This makes the sleep products wonderfully soft and pliable, which will undoubtedly benefit any sleep. To ensure the most breathable and temperature-regulating sleep product possible, we only use merino wool fibers that are over 8 cm. The longer fibers will create a more airy and lighter fill. This makes the duvet feel light, breathable, and incredibly body-neutral in its temperature.

From the Spanish mountains to your home

The Merino sheep is the world's most numerous sheep breed and originally comes from Spain, but is now widespread throughout the world. For our Cocoon merino wool products, only wool from Merino sheep that roam the mountains daily is used. These sheep produce longer wool due to the colder air in the mountains. When selecting our merino wool, it is crucial that the production of the merino wool is done in the animals' best interest. We therefore have a strict policy that we only use wool from sheep that are free-range, sheared in a fair and proper manner, and not subjected to mulesing. Therefore, we exclusively use Spanish merino wool, where mulesing is not practiced.

Which thickness should I choose?

A good rule of thumb is:

  • If you often feel too warm at night and struggle with sweating during the night, even if you sleep cool, then the light version is a really good choice for you. If you really struggle with the heat, to the extent that even summer duvets feel too warm, then try looking at our wool summer duvet, which is even thinner than the light wool duvet. If there's a duvet that can help with the heat - it's this one.
  • If you often feel warm and find yourself having to push your normal duvet aside to cool down, or if you experience both warm and cold nights, then the medium (standard) version is a good choice for you.
  • If you often feel cold and are a bit of a cold-blooded person, then the heavy version is a really good choice.

What you need to be aware of with wool, which is very different from other duvets, is that the temperature range a wool duvet can handle is much broader than that of a regular duvet. While feather and down duvets often come in many thicknesses for different room temperatures and seasons, a Cocoon wool duvet can cover multiple seasons and much larger fluctuations in room temperatures. This is due to the wool duvet's incredible breathability and unique temperature-regulating properties. A person who often feels warm and a person who often feels cold can easily sleep under the same duvet, as the duvet will cool one while warming the other.

If you're in doubt, don't hesitate to contact us and have a chat about your needs and which wool duvet we think will suit you and your preferences best.

Wool Summer Duvet 200x220

Cocoon Merino Wool

WDS-200220

Summer is a wonderful season, but for both young and old, the warm summer nights can lead to restless sleep. Do you find your all-season duvet too warm? Then it will definitely be beneficial for you to replace your all-season duvet with a cool summer duvet.

Temperature Regulating

Merino wool is naturally breathable and is actually one of the most breathable materials available. Merino wool is an active fiber that reacts to changes in body temperature. In warm environments, wool feels up to twice as cool against the skin as synthetic materials.

Moisture Wicking

When the body gets warm, merino wool wicks away the heat by absorbing moisture from the body and allowing it to evaporate through its fibers. Merino wool can absorb up to 35% moisture of its own weight without feeling wet or losing its temperature-regulating properties. This is particularly beneficial during warm summer nights when the body releases moisture to maintain its core temperature.

100% Organic

We use neither chemicals nor synthetically manufactured materials to produce your summer duvet with merino wool. The summer duvet has a casing of 100% organically certified cotton. We use long wool fibers that are carded to create a light and airy summer duvet. We use only 100% natural and untreated merino wool, which is beneficial for the environment and for you, as you get the best and most natural summer duvet.

Antibacterial

We use 100% natural and untreated merino wool in our summer duvet. This means we have not washed out the natural lanolin content from the wool. The natural lanolin content helps create an antibacterial environment in the merino wool, where dust mites, bacteria, and fungi cannot thrive.

Summer Duvet with Down or Merino Wool?

Several studies show that both children and adults sleep better with merino wool - amazing, right?! Research shows that newborns sleep more peacefully in merino wool and are less likely to wake and cry during the night. But adults also benefit greatly from sleeping with merino wool. Merino wool has significantly better temperature-regulating properties than other materials like down, which is often used for summer duvets. When choosing a good summer duvet, it is important to choose a duvet that is more regulating rather than insulating.

As previously mentioned, merino wool is one of the most breathable fibers available and is fantastic at adapting to your child's body temperature. When you choose a summer duvet with merino wool instead of a traditional summer duvet with feathers or down, you will find that the summer duvet with merino wool is far better at adapting to your child's core temperature than a down duvet. This is because a down duvet is more insulating rather than regulating. When you get warm under the duvet, you will find that your down duvet becomes damp. A feather or down duvet quickly becomes damp when you sweat, as feathers and down absorb moisture. You will not experience this with a summer duvet with merino wool. Merino wool can absorb 35% moisture of its own weight without feeling damp.

If you ask us, merino wool is an underrated and overlooked filling in duvets - especially summer duvets. Still in doubt? Do not hesitate to contact customer service for further guidance.
