Give your child the best start in life with the world’s first humane silk duvet, made from 100% organic Mulberry Peace Silk. A temperature-regulating and allergy-friendly all-season duvet – exclusively developed by Cocoon Company.
The Cocoon Peaceful Silk baby duvet in size 70x100 cm is designed for parents who want only the best for their child – in terms of comfort, health, and thoughtful materials. This unique duvet is made from 100% organic Mulberry Peace Silk – a silk harvested without harming the silkworm, offering a truly unique and more considerate way of working with silk. Cocoon Company was the first in the world to develop this humane production method. The hollow and long structure of the silk fibers provides excellent temperature regulation, ensuring that your baby stays comfortably warm or cool throughout the year. It is also highly breathable, efficiently drawing moisture away from the body to maintain a dry and comfortable sleeping environment. Silk naturally repels dust mites, and they cannot thrive in the environment created by the silk fibers. At the same time, silk is a very long and strong fiber that does not break down and produce dust – unlike down and synthetic materials. This makes the duvet an ideal choice for parents who want a cleaner and quieter sleeping environment for their child. Despite its lightweight and thin appearance, this is a true all-season duvet that adapts to your child’s body and temperature. It is especially popular as a summer duvet and for use in strollers during warmer days. In winter, it can also be used indoors if your home maintains a stable, warmer average temperature. For colder days in a stroller, we recommend bundling up your baby well – or consider a wool duvet as a warmer alternative. This duvet is particularly suitable for newborns and small babies, as it is thin, breathable, and relatively heavy for its volume. This combination offers many infants a sense of calm and security. (Please note: This duvet is not machine washable and must be hand-washed or dry cleaned. See our “Care & Maintenance” section for more information.) Who is the silk duvet ideal for? The Cocoon Peaceful Silk baby duvet is ideal for infants and toddlers who need a light, breathable duvet that keeps their body dry and temperature regulated. This duvet is particularly suited for babies who are sensitive to dust and dust mites. The silk fiber is naturally dust-repellent and creates an environment where dust mites do not thrive. Unlike down and synthetic materials, silk does not break or shed, which results in minimal dust. In addition, the duvet is more breathable than any other type of filling, ensuring consistently dry and comfortable sleep – both day and night. Though technically an all-season duvet, its lightweight and airy structure makes it especially popular during the warmer months and for use in the stroller. It can easily be used indoors in winter if the room temperature is stable and warm. For outdoor use in cold weather, make sure your child is well wrapped up, or consider switching to a warmer wool duvet. Why choose our silk duvet? At Cocoon Company, we never settle for less. We created the world’s first humane silk duvet series – and we’re still the only company producing silk duvets in this way. Our duvets are made from 100% organic Mulberry Peace Silk, where every silkworm is allowed to complete its natural life cycle and emerge as a butterfly – just as nature intended. Unlike conventional silk production, where millions of silkworms are boiled alive, we choose a different path. A path where ethics and care go hand in hand with comfort and quality. Our silk is not chemically treated, nor blended with lower-grade or synthetic fibers. It is not chlorine bleached, and our duvet cover is sewn from GOTS-certified organic cotton. Every single component is chosen with care. There are many silk duvets on the market – but few dare to tell you how their silk is made. We do, and we stand by it. For us, it’s not just about luxury – it’s about responsibility. And when it comes to your baby, you should be able to trust that every choice has been made with heart. Unfortunately, the sad truth is that the vast majority of us either don't want to understand, or don't care, how conventional silk is produced. The result is that hundreds of millions, perhaps even billions of silkworms are killed each year before they can become a silk butterfly. All because we as consumers demand products produced with silk, without thinking more about the consequences.
THE CONVENTIONAL SILK INDUSTRY It takes about ten days for a silkworm to hatch from its egg. The silkworm will then begin to feed continuously for about a month until it has reached its optimal weight, approximately 10,000 times heavier than when it hatched. Depending on the species of silkworm, the caterpillars will eat different kinds of leaves. Silkworms of the species Bombyx Mori eat mulberry leaves, and their silk is therefore characterized by the name Mulberry silk. When the silkworm is fully grown, it will begin to spin a shell of silk, also called a cocoon. This can take between three and eight days.
In order to maximize the yield, in some cases, in conventional production, the silkworms will be given a growth hormone called Methoprene, which causes the caterpillar to spin silk for a longer time. A cocoon produces around 500 meters of silk thread, so an extension of the spinning time can therefore potentially make a big difference to the yield. Inside the protective silk cocoon, the larva then enters the pupal stage, where it forms a hard shell around itself.
Normally, a silkworm would pupate for about two weeks before eventually eating its way through the cocoon and emerging as a silk butterfly. After this, it would be in a hurry to find a mate and reproduce, as it only lives about a week after hatching. Unfortunately, the silkworms never make it that far. In conventional silk production, the silk cocoons are boiled with the pupated larvae inside as soon as the silkworms have pupated. This is done to preserve the silk cocoons whole, as the silk butterfly's excavation from the cocoon would shorten the silk fiber and complicate the further process. This is due, among other things, to that you can produce nicer silk meter goods from long silk threads. The value of a long silk thread is therefore higher than if the silk thread is bitten by the silk butterfly during its flight from the cocoon. As a consequence, around 6,500 pupated silkworms are killed for every kilo of silk extracted.
THE HUMANE SILK In response to conventional silk production, a more humane method of silk production began to be developed, with a strong focus on animal welfare. The method was called Ahimsa, and originates from the classical cultural language Sanskrit, where it can be translated as "lack of desire to kill".
Ahimsa is an ethical principle that originates from the Jain, Hindu and Buddhist faiths, and which involves the preservation of all living things on earth. Ahimsa therefore also means protection of the environment and natural habitats. The Ahimsa method therefore not only places a strong focus on animal welfare, but also on ecology and chemical-free production. As Ahimsa silk has become more widespread, the silk has become known under the more international name Peace Silk.
The difference between conventional silk production and the extraction of Peace Silk can already be seen when the silkworm eggs hatch. Contrary to the conventional method, the silkworms are fed only with mulberry leaves from organic mulberry trees. The larvae are not given growth hormones, and will not grow as large as silkworms in conventional production. Peace Silk larvae will therefore not spin for as long as regular larvae, and the yield will therefore also be less.
After the Peace Silk caterpillars have pupated, each individual silk cocoon is carefully cut open, and the silk pupae are placed among mulberry leaves, from which the silk butterflies can be allowed to hatch. It takes about ten days from the time the silkworm pupates until it hatches as a silk butterfly. After this, the silk butterflies will focus on finding a mate and reproducing before they go out into the wild again.
A Cocoon Peaceful Silk duvet is made from the finest untreated Mulberry Peace Silk, where the silk is harvested in the gentlest way possible, resulting in a truly unique silk quality. To preserve the natural silk fiber for many years, we do not recommend washing the duvet, not even when you first receive it.
With normal use, it is sufficient to air the duvet regularly in the shade and fresh air. Silk is naturally resistant to dust mites, which cannot thrive in a silk duvet.
If an accident happens and cleaning is unavoidable, we always recommend professional dry cleaning. This is the most gentle and safest method, minimizing the risk of damaging the delicate silk fibers.
If you still wish to attempt a gentle hand wash or spot cleaning at home, please follow these instructions carefully:
How to hand wash or spot clean your silk duvet properly • Always use lukewarm water at exactly 30°C. Neither colder nor warmer. Use the same temperature for both washing and rinsing, as silk fibers are sensitive to sudden temperature changes. • Use a mild, enzyme-free detergent suitable for silk or wool. • Gently wash by hand without pulling, twisting, or stretching the fibers or the duvet. • After rinsing, gently press out the water. Do not wring. Roll the duvet and carefully squeeze out the water. Repeat until excess water is removed. • Lay the duvet flat on an absorbent towel, preferably on a warm floor. Turn it regularly and replace the towels to ensure gentle and effective drying. When the duvet feels dry, you can drape it over a chair to remove the final moisture.
With proper care, a silk duvet can last for many years while retaining its comfort and function. If you have any questions, we are always here to help.
