The water-repellent effect of the kapok fiber is one of two reasons why kapok is 100% hypoallergenic. Since the kapok fiber does not absorb moisture, dust mites cannot live in the fiber. Dust mites need a humid environment to survive. Therefore, kapok is an excellent pillow for dust mite allergy sufferers. Since dust mites can cause allergies in children, kapok products can be good for young children. The kapok fiber also contains a bitter substance that makes the duvet resistant to other mites.
