Why choose a kapok pillow?

Most people can relate to the experience of a feather or down pillow becoming very warm during the night. You get so warm that you need to flip the pillow during the night to get the cool side. This is because feathers and down are both fantastic at insulating. The good insulation provides a really nice feeling during the cold months when we want to retain as much heat as possible. It's really nice until you've warmed the pillow and the duvet to body temperature. After this, the body needs to get rid of the excess heat and moisture. Unfortunately, this is where feathers and down often fall short. A kapok pillow is fantastic at regulating heat due to the lightness and structure of the kapok fiber, which allows heat and moisture to be transported away from the body. A kapok pillow is therefore especially suitable for you if you tend to feel too warm at night.

Kapok is a natural fiber that grows on the kapok tree Cebia pentandra in the tropical rainforests of southern and central America, India, and the western part of Africa. You can partially compare kapok to cotton, but kapok differs by being much airier than cotton. The kapok fiber contains 80% air and is thus 8 times lighter than cotton, making it the world's lightest natural fiber. The high air content in the kapok fiber is what makes it incredibly temperature-regulating and breathable.

When you sleep with a kapok pillow, you will therefore experience that the pillow adapts to your body temperature. A kapok pillow is therefore one of the best things to sleep with if you have problems with night sweats or simply find a regular down pillow too warm and insulating. A kapok pillow also stands out by being water-repellent. The kapok fiber contains a natural layer of wax around each silky-soft fiber. This means that the kapok pillow will not absorb the moisture and sweat that the body emits during the night. Instead, the moisture is transported away from the body through the fiber's many airy cavities. You will therefore find that a kapok pillow remains wonderfully dry throughout the night.

Washing & Maintenance

Kapok is a unique natural fibre with exceptional properties that deserve proper care.
Read our instructions and prolong the life of your kapok product!

To preserve the fibre structure and its properties as best as possible, we recommend only washing your kapok product if absolutely necessary. Your Cocoon kapok products have not been dyed or treated with chemicals, so there is no need to wash your new kapok product before use.

Kapok also contains a natural bitter substance, which makes the fibre, and therefore the products, naturally resistant to house dust mites and many bacteria. For this reason, it is rarely necessary to wash your kapok product unless a major accident has occurred in bed. For minor stains, we recommend spot cleaning only.

We recommend airing your kapok product from time to time to maintain a healthy and fresh sleeping environment.

WASHING:

If it becomes necessary to wash your Cocoon kapok product, it is important to follow these instructions carefully:

Wash the product alone at 40°C on a short cycle to protect the fibre. It is possible to wash at 60°C if strictly needed. Choose a short cycle, as prolonged exposure to water can damage the kapok fibres. Do not soak the product.
Do NOT use a washer-dryer combination machine, as they often do not spin the water out properly before the drying cycle begins.
Always select an extra spin cycle of at least 1400 RPM to remove as much water as possible.
Use a gentle detergent without enzymes or bleach, such as the Cocoon soap bar.
Do not use fabric softener.
Once washed, dry the product immediately, as delays may damage the fibre or cause clumping.

How to dry your Cocoon kapok product:

Always dry the kapok product alone in the tumble dryer.
Kapok takes time to dry. We recommend using wool dryer balls, which help reduce drying time and gently separate the fibres to prevent clumping. Do not use tennis balls, as they can break the fine fibres.
Dry with warm air, and repeat the drying cycle if the kapok still feels moist. Continue drying until the product is completely dry inside. This is crucial to avoid damaging the kapok fibres and will help prolong the lifespan of your product.

As a natural fibre, kapok will naturally soften and lose volume over time as it is used. This is completely normal. The lifespan of your kapok product depends on external factors such as use, care, and wear.

If in doubt about how to wash or dry kapok, feel free to contact your local retailer or Cocoon Company’s customer service at:shop@cocooncompany.dk
