In the worst case, this can lead to mold spores forming under the mattress. Unfortunately, this can happen with any mattress. Therefore, air the mattress once a week or as needed.

Since a kapok mattress is hand-stuffed with loose natural fiber, it's important to maintain the mattress occasionally as needed (as you would with a futon mattress), by standing the mattress on its side and massaging/pressing the fiber from the edge towards the center, where the mattress is most stressed during use. If this is not done, the mattress can form a hollow where the kapok fiber is most compressed.

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR KAPOK MATTRESS

As with all mattresses, it is a good idea to stand the mattress on its side occasionally to air it out. If you have a bed with a solid base, you should be particularly careful to air the mattress regularly. These bed bases make it harder to transport moisture away from the mattress. Kapok transports moisture and heat away from the child, but if the moisture cannot escape from the bottom of the mattress, it gets trapped between the mattress and the solid base. In the worst case, this can lead to mold spores forming under the mattress. Unfortunately, this can happen regardless of the mattress used. Therefore, air the mattress once a week or as needed.
